I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and other girls my age.The armpit of life How did Kenzie describe school? Understanding how the social food chain is organized What did Maya say could help a person navigate the armit of life (school)? patricians, plebians Maya's School Popularity Scale went from P_ at the top to P_ at the bottom. I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars because it has all the qualities and emotions a good teenage book should have. Along with comical illustrations, this book definitely makes you laugh. My favorite part was when Maya explained how her girdle made her look like she had “quadruple cheek syndrome” when she made an attempt to look slimmer. Maya was my favorite character because being a 12 year old girl in middle school I can definitely relate to her. Since some of the suggestions Betty listed were outdated, Maya looked and sounded a little silly, but in the end, Betty sure does help. Maya started to listen to the “tips” Betty Cornell provided. One day while the Van Wagenen’s were cleaning out their garage, Maya happened to come across the old abandoned book (written in the 1950’s) titled “ Betty Cornell’s Teen-Age Popularity Guide“, and thought it could help her to overcome her shyness and become popular. Maya’s father purchased a book from a thrift store before Maya was born. Popular is about the laughs and hard times Maya faces as a 13 year old living in Brownsville, Texas. I really enjoyed the book Popular by Maya Van Wagenen.
